About me

Hi, I’m James. I’m a person-centred psychotherapist with a relational-psychodynamic tint. I have a background in medicine and mental health writing. Which means I’m trained in both talking and thinking deeply - and I bring that to the therapy room with warmth, honesty, and a good sense of timing.

I work mostly with people who feel stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand - things like anxiety, repressed anger, difficulty in relationships, or feeling like they’re always performing and never quite themselves. A lot of my clients are people often wrestling with questions around masculinity, femininity, purpose, addiction, or burnout. But whoever I’m working with, I’m paying close attention to what’s going on beneath the surface - in the body, in the relationship, and in the unconscious.

My training is in person-centred therapy (BACP-accredited), with additional study in psychodynamic, somatic work, and Jungian archetypal psychology. I’m influenced by clinicians like Carl Rogers, Jonathan Shedler, Nancy McWilliams, and Alexander Lowen. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years in medical research and writing which has given me a grounded, evidence-based approach to psychological work without losing sight of the human story.

It is my job as your therapist to provide the conditions from which you can grow. I like to call this liminal space: liminal comes from the Latin word "limen", which mean "threshold". Encapsulated in this "liminal space" is uncertainty, confusion, and chaos. But there is also a seed of growth, clarity, and order. This is the seed we will aim to cultivate.

I don’t believe in quick fixes or trying to “stay positive.” I believe in making space for the real stuff - the anger, grief, fear, desire - and doing the kind of work that leads to lasting, meaningful change. Therapy with me is relational, deep, and collaborative. You won’t be given homework sheets, but you will be invited to show up more fully to your life.

I hold a BSc, and two post-graduate diplomas, along with a number of training certificates.
